FAQ - IPL treatments

What is IPL?

Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) is used as an effective treatment for excessive hair growth and skin diseases. Different skin layers absorb light of different wavelengths. The absorbed light is converted into heat, which is an effective treatment for various indications.

Are IPL treatments suitable for everyone?

The treatment for unwanted hair growth requires the hair to contain pigmentation to conduct the light and the heat to the hair follicle, which is the part to be destroyed. Blond, red and grey hair as well as transitional / downy hair contains little or no pigmentation. In these cases, a successful treatment cannot be guaranteed.

Excluded from IPL treatment are the darker skin types (skin type VI) due to their very strong pigmentation. Other skin types will benefit from IPL treatment.

There are several other exclusion criteria. Our Partners will always first have an intake interview with you to review IPL and get a medical history from you so as to assess your suitability for IPL treatment.

What is the difference between IPL and Laser?

IPL IS NO LASER! IPL stands for Intense Pulsed Light and Laser stands for Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation. Laser and IPL are frequently interchanged and confused, even though there are huge differences in terms of safety, costs and speed. Our MedCos IPL Partners will be happy to explain the differences between the two principles.

What is a successful permanent hair removal program?

A permanent hair removal program is said to be a success at 80-90% hair reduction. Due to many restrictive factors (such as hormones),it is not possible to create a 100% hair free location using an IPL or Laser system. For many clients treated with the MedCos® IPL method, 6 sessions achieve a 80-90% hair reduction; on average however, 8 sessions are required for a satisfactory end result.

Are the IPL treatments expensive?

NO. Compared to years and years of buying blades, taking resin or wax treatments, or applying hair removal creams, it is absolutely not expensive. Beside the cost saving you realize over time, you will also enjoy the comfort of not needing to worry about unshaven locations and you will not be bothered anymore by ingrown hairs.
